This is the final script that I intend to put into my magazine article review, this is in the form of a film critic reviewing the movie and relaying their opinions onto a magazine that would usually contain these certain types of films.
In this upcoming new film which is to be released in April 2014, the title ‘Evanescent’ which means something fading out of sight, memory or existence, which judging by the pictures, the audience would realise this relates to the ghostly image that appears in the movie posters. This film beautifully explores the intricacies of the human mind, and how certain past traumas stay with a person no matter how much they try to forget about it. It also explores the theme of repression and revenge as the audience are left wondering whether the ghost ‘Rosalie’ portrayed by Jakiya Sultana is real or imaginary in the mind of the main character. The main character, ‘Paloma’ is portrayed by Tobi Olowoporoku, this film is also her debut onto the big screen.
The director of this film, Natasha Sizer, who was also the co-producer in the film ‘Redemption’ which came out last year, takes on a different approach in the type of genre, however keeping to the theme of revenge and re-deeming oneself. This time, the director tackles this theme through a more psychological approach, a more mental and emotional outlook as opposed to the physical.
This film brings all the tension and suspense of a typical psychological thriller with creepy music to match. The scenery and location in this film is stunning and there are other bits of the scenery i.e the alley which nicely contrasts it, giving the film a ‘gritty edge’ to the backstory of how Paloma’s best friend dies. The flashback scene also creates an enigma for the audience surrounding the stabbing of Rosalie, and leaves the audience open to suggestions about whether this really was just a ‘random stabbing’ or was it something more sinister? The end scene will just leave you feeling even more confused as to whether this is but a manifestation of Paloma’s mind, or is this a revenge ghost film? It is up to the audience to decide that.
As Tobi Olowoporoku’s first time, it’s only natural that the acting cannot be compared to one who has been acting and has experience so least to say, the acting could be slightly better, there are some bits where the acting can only be described as ‘over-zealous’ but with the music to build up the tension, this does help not let the audience give up on this film, however, Tobi holds her own throughout this film, she has the potential to be a movie star but needs to improve slightly in order to compete with the A-listers. The score is hauntingly beautiful and it is bound to leave the audience at the edge of their seats.
It is not the best psychological thriller out there, but anyone who fancies a movie that keeps you intrigued and leaves you on the edge of your seat and keeps you guessing till the very end, then this film might do it for you, if one can get over the sometimes ‘over-the-top’ reactions from some of the actors, the ending however will leave you confused and will definitely not disappoint. Whether you like this sort of film or not, it is up to the viewer. It is completely subjective.
